Download Help
When downloading software from an FTP server, every combination of client, proxy server, and
firewall may behave differently.
In the follwing, some of the common problems and possible workarounds are listed.
- Enable the FTP passive mode
FTP uses incoming connections which a blocked by many firewalls.
If the passive mode is enabled, the client will use only outgoing
connections.
- Enable the FTP proxy server
Many HTTP proxy servers allow downloading files through
FTP URLs. Make sure you have enabled this feature in your
browser when connecting to the internet through a proxy server.
- Use a download manager
There are many free and commercial download managers available,
which allow you to resume a download when it is interupted due to network problems.
If you are behind a firewall, configure the proxy options of the download manager
accordingly.
Some download managers write a log of all commands and responses exchanged with the server.
This can be very helpful for diagnosing specific download problems.
- Explicitly specify the FTP user
Some combinations of browser and proxy server request an FTP authentication. If your browser
prompts you for a user name and password, enter the user name anonymous,
leave the password field empty, and confirm your entry.
You can also add the user name to the URL. For that purpose change ftp://ftp.sap.com/pub/... to
ftp://anonymous@ftp.sap.com/pub/....
- Order the free CD-ROM
The SAP DB CD-ROM contains an up-to-date
version of the software and can be ordered free of charge.
- Use a public HTTP proxy server
If your HTTP proxy server does not understand FTP requests, you
can use a public HTTP proxy. However, it has often an only
limited bandwidth and is not intended for large software
downloads. Therefore it should only be used if all other attempts failed.
